NT Reading: Hebrews 3:1-6; OT Reading: Isa.40:21-31

v.1
-Therefore, - in light of what the apostle just taught us about Jesus in chapter 2. recap:
-since Jesus was made lower than the angels for a little while
-he tasted death for everyone of the many sons and daughters of God
-whom he is also bringing to glory - the glorious state of perfect holiness
-was perfected through the experience of suffering in our place
-he’s making us holy
-he’s not ashamed to call us his brothers and sisters
-he shared in our humanity to obey his Father unto death as our representative older brother
-by his death, he destroyed/broke the power of the devil who holds the power of death
-he freed us from the slavery of the fear of death
-he helps Abraham’s descendants the father of many nations - those who have faith in Jesus
-fully human in every way, minus sin, and that way became a merciful & faithful high priest
-in service to God - atoning - bringing us back into a relationship with God. propitiation - turning away God's wrath from us
-when he was tempted to sin he suffered so he is able to help those who are being tempted
-NOW because of his obedient life and substitutionary death - he is crowned with glory and honor
-THEREFORE

-holy brothers and sisters, - saints/set apart for God, made holy by Jesus’ finished work
-who share in the heavenly calling, - called to trust in Jesus for justification (Rom.8:30)
-fix your thoughts on Jesus, - we begin, continue and end (glorified) with Jesus. ponder Jesus
-whom we acknowledge - Jesus is our creed, our confession, all about his person and work
-as our apostle - sent one. sent by God to bring us back to God
-and high priest - he gave a perfect sacrifice of himself for our sin to God -to atone & propitiate
v.2
-He was faithful to the one who appointed him, - he finished the work Father gave him John 17:4
-just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. - God's house are God’s people - Moses is part of God's house
v.3
-Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, - Jesus gets greater honor since Moses is only part of the house
-just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. Jesus is the builder-has greater honor-Moses in the house
v.4
-For every house is built by someone, - every building has a builder
-but God is the builder of everything. - Jesus the God/Man. the house-church. material-word, prayer, trials. land-God’s kingdom
v.5
-“Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” - servant - all OT&NT all servants though faithful failed
-bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. -Scripture fulfilled in the Son - faithful perfectly
v.6
-But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. - the Son is the owner “over” God’s house
-And we are his house, - “living stones’ built into “a spiritual house” 1 Peter 2:5
-if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory. - only by his grace and his strength, we will persevere

“Christ has absolute and supreme authority over everyone and everything.” (John Owen)
