The First independence day

"The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it." (Genesis 3:6)

"And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.”" (Genesis 2:16-17)

God gave Adam only one commandment - not to eat from just one tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God was very generous with Adam in giving him all the trees of the garden to eat from. Adam was to depend on God for everything with thanksgiving to him as his Creator.

But the moment Eve broke God's commandment and ate the forbidden fruit she became independent of God and gave it to her husband Adam so he would become independent of God as well. And they, in turn, produced children born independent of God and now all the people of the world are teaching each other how to be independent of God.

The result is death. First, the spiritual death and then physical death and eventually eternal death, until...

Until God's only Son Jesus Christ came as a man and lived a life of obedience to his Heavenly Father in our place, fully depending on his Father. Jesus obeyed his Father unto death on the cross of Calvary to pay for our sin. And Jesus did all that so he would be the firstborn from the dead of those he came to save.
