The American edition of Slashgear has compiled a list of the most problematic cars of popular brands on the secondary market. To do this, they used the data of the service CarComplaints.com . This is one of the largest online resources for the consideration of automobile complaints. Based on information from respondents, experts have compiled a rating of cars of four brands that break down most often. All of these models are now sold in Russia, and some of them are very popular on the secondary market. Autonews.ru I decided to figure out what’s wrong with these cars.
Toyota Camry
The Japanese Toyota Camry sedan was included in the global ranking of the most unreliable cars. We are talking about a 2007 model. Owners of such a car complain massively about “excessive oil consumption”. According to the report, such a problem in most cases occurs in cars with a minimum mileage of 97,000 miles (156,106 km). Later, according to the owners, this leads to serious engine failures and expensive repairs. Therefore, experts recommend to refrain from buying such a model if its age exceeds 16 years. Also among the complaints of motorists are problems with the upholstery of the Japanese sedan.
In Russia, used Toyota Camry are usually in high demand. For example, for a 2007 car, sellers ask from 1 million to 1.5 million rubles. However, there are much more offers for the sale of fresher sedans, but for a lot of money.
Toyota RAV4
However, the RAV4 crossover of the fifth generation (2019) was recognized as the most problematic Toyota model. According to respondents, after the car drove about 3,000 miles (4828 km), they encountered problems with the suspension, which negatively affected the ride comfort. Fixing defects in service centers cost about $2000. Also, drivers complained about the leaking hatch of the car. Moreover, for some cars it ended up with problems with the electronics in the car. In addition, Toyota RAV4 2019 several times fell under various service campaigns. So, the cars were recalled due to problems with the fuel pump and possible leakage of coolant.

In Russia, the RAV4 regularly enters the list of the most popular used crossovers. A car with a 2-liter engine with a capacity of 150 hp in 2019 can be bought on average for 2.5 million rubles.
Also included in the anti-rating were: Toyota Corolla (2009), Toyota Avalon (2012–2015).
BMW X3
The most popular BMW that got into the reliability anti-rating was the crossover X3 2013, 2015 and 2020. Among the most common complaints of owners is an oil leak. In addition, many drivers have encountered a leaky sunroof on a used X3. Among the more serious problems is a radiator and suspension malfunction. Also, the owners of crossovers were dissatisfied with the cost of repairing the car. The average check at the service center was $1,000.

German BMW X3 crossovers are in high demand in the secondary market of Russia. For example, a 2013 car with a 2-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 184 hp and a four-wheel drive system will cost about 2 million rubles.
Cars that were produced in 2020 are much more expensive. So, for an all-wheel drive crossover with a 252-horsepower engine, you will have to pay 4 4.5 million rubles.
BMW 3-Series
Also, the BMW 3-Series model got into the anti-rating. Moreover, this applies to cars in all body variants (coupe, sedan, convertible), which were produced from 2007 to 2013.

The problems of all these cars are identical: oil leakage, broken windows, engine overheating, suspension defects and a non-working power steering. Also, the authors of the study recalled several mass recalls of the BMW 3-Series due to the possible incorrect operation of the airbags. In addition, the maintenance of a used German car will require significant financial investments. However, the exact amount in the study for some reason is not specified.
In the domestic used car market, buying a BMW 3-Series will not be a problem. The 2013 sedan can be found for about 1.5 million rubles. Among the older cars, the choice is not so wide anymore. For example, the 2008 –2009 four-door model is offered for about 1 million rubles.
Also included in the anti-rating were: BMW X5 (2011–2014), BMW E60 M5 (2004–2010).
Nissan Pathfinder
Nissan Pathfinder is one of the most popular crossovers in the USA. According to the study, the car is valued among local drivers for its capacity and driving qualities. However, many drivers later became disillusioned with their cars. As a result, used Nissan Pathfinder 2005–2012 was recognized as one of the most unreliable models of the brand. The main complaint on the part of motorists is the gearbox and radiator operation. It was because of these problems that drivers were forced to contact the service and pay for expensive repairs.

At the same time, with a “plus” sign, respondents rated a used Nissan Pathfinder of the first generation, which was produced in 1987 and 1995. This crossover turned out to be less problematic than a more modern model.
In Russia, the 2005 Nissan Pathfinder, if desired, can be bought for less than 1 million rubles. You will have to pay 1.5–1.8 million rubles for a 2012 car.
Nissan Rogue
Also, Americans were disappointed with the Nissan Rogue crossover (in our market, this model is known as the X-Trail). At the same time, the next-generation machine (2014 to 2020) is characterized by higher reliability. According to the authors of the study, an excellent option would be to buy a used crossover of these years with a hybrid powerplant.
Also included in the anti-rating were: Nissan Altima (2013–2018), Nissan Versa, Nissan Maxima (2204–2008).
Tesla Model X
As noted in the study, the Tesla Model X electric car has become the most unsuccessful model of an American company in its history. This is indirectly confirmed by Elon Musk himself, who stated in an interview that he was not sure that they should have made this car at all. So, since the launch of crossover production in 2015, this car has been under 24 recall campaigns in the USA.

For example, Tesla electric cars were sent to the service due to faulty seat belts, defective airbags and failure of collision prevention systems and autonomous driving systems. Also, the owners of the “green” crossover complain about the suspension and the short-lived windshield.
In Russia, you can find a lot of ads on specialized websites about the sale of the Tesla Model X. Car prices vary greatly depending on the configuration. On average, a 2018–2019 car will cost 7.1–7.7 million rubles.
Tesla Model S
Things are a little better with the reliability of the Tesla Model S liftback, although it also got into the anti-rating of the most problematic electric cars. Most often, drivers complained of battery failure, electronics failures, as well as problems with the suspension and braking system.
