General information about the M-12 highway
The M-12 high-speed highway «East» is part of the international transport route Europe — Western China. The length of the route is more than 800 km. The highway M-12 Moscow — Kazan passes through the territory of the Moscow, Vladimir, Nizhny Novgorod regions, the Chuvash Republic and the Republic of Tatarstan.
In 2015, the heads of Russia and China signed a cooperation agreement to create the Silk Road Economic Belt, which includes transport links. On July 10, 2020, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced the start of construction of the M-12. In particular, he announced the construction of three unique bridges: a cable-stayed bridge across the Oka, a monolithic bridge across the Sura and a three-kilometer bridge across the Volga.

The total length of the highway is 811 km, of which 47.52 km are toll sections. The permitted speed is up to 110 km/h, but, according to Deputy Prime Minister of the government Marat Khusnullin, in some areas it is possible to increase the speed to 120 km/h 140 km/h.
Thanks to this highway, the journey from Moscow to Kazan will take 6.5 hours. Previously, the travel time exceeded 12 hours due to the heavy congestion of the current federal highway M-7, as well as numerous intersections and traffic lights. It will be possible to get from Moscow to Vladimir in two hours instead of the usual four.

The highway starts in Moscow from the MKAD (at the intersection with the North-Eastern Chord), and then passes through Noginsk, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Vladimir, Arzamas, Kanash and ends in the village of Shali near Kazan. The road will pass away from such major cities as Nizhny Novgorod and Cheboksary, but they will be provided with access to the expressway. Also, a new bridge across the Volga will be built south of Kazan.

According to Khusnullin, the section of the highway from Arzamas to Kazan should open on December 20, 2023. However, after the start of traffic on the road, work on it will continue. The construction is planned to be fully completed by the end of 2024.
The fare on the M-12 highway
In August of this 2023, the state-owned company Avtodor presented prices for travel along the section from Moscow to Arzamas. For owners of passenger cars, the trip will cost 2821 rubles. But a trip from Moscow to Vladimir will cost almost twice as much as 1399 rubles.When traveling from Vladimir to Arzamas, you will have to pay 1,422 rubles.
You can go around Balashikha by car for 130 rubles. (Moscow — Electric coal), a trip from Moscow to the Central Ring Road will cost 389 rubles., and motorists will pay 585 rubles for driving on the toll highway from Moscow to Orekhovo-Zuyevo.

The track is equipped with a “Free Flow” system. Cars pass without slowing down under the road frames on which the equipment is placed.
