In August 2023, more than 100,000 new passenger cars were sold in Russia for the first time since February 2022. Sales data were prepared by the Committee of Automakers of the Association of European Businesses (AEB) and the agency “Autostat”.

Each study has its own methods, which are not without drawbacks. So, AEB collects official information from official brand representative offices, but now many market leaders, in particular Chery and Geely, do not provide it on a monthly basis. In turn, “Autostat” counts all brands, but not by the fact of sale in a car dealership, but by the fact of changing the owner when registering with the traffic police. Thus, some of the cars sold do not get into the statistics of the “Autostat” immediately.

Here are the top 10 most popular models in August.

Lada Granta

Thanks to the low price, Granta remains the absolute leader of the Russian market. Buyers are not even confused by the fact that cars were produced exclusively in white in August. The car is half the price of any new foreign car, which makes for many the choice in its favor without alternative.

Since September 1, AvtoVAZ has resumed production of Lada Granta with Euro-5 engines instead of Euro-2 versions produced since 2022 due to a shortage of foreign components. This led to an increase in prices for some versions by 40 thousand rubles. The cost of the basic Lada Granta remained the same and amounts to 699.9 thousand rubles, but the simplest equipment disappeared from the site for 692.3 thousand rubles, which has already been discontinued. At some regional dealers, however, it is still found for 662.3 thousand rubles.

Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max

According to “Autostat”, Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max holds the second place in sales in Russia for the second month in a row and leads both among foreign cars and crossovers. The AEB believes that Lada Niva sells better, but there we are talking about the total result of the Niva Legend and Niva Travel models, which in fact are two different cars.

The success of the Chery Tiggo Pro Max 7 could be facilitated, firstly, by an update carried out in early 2023, and secondly, by the appearance of all-wheel drive versions in the summer. The latter are significantly more expensive, but allow you to expand the circle of potential buyers.

Finally, dealers have run out of stocks of Japanese, Korean and European cars remaining since the beginning of 2022. And cars arriving through parallel imports turn out to be significantly more expensive.

Lada Vesta

In the case of Lada Vesta, the data on sales and registrations differ quite significantly. In theory, this may be due to numerous reports that cars arrive incomplete to dealers: in particular, ERA-GLONASS systems and edging on the dashboard are missing.

As a result, dealers find buyers for such cars, but they cannot give them cars before the missing parts come from the factory.

The cost of Lada Vesta increased slightly by September, but only for the Cross modification with a sedan body. The other versions have not yet risen in price.

Haval Jolion

Jolion is the only foreign car that falls under the state program of preferential car loans. This is due to the local assembly of the model at the factory in Tula. However, you can get a preferential loan only for a car worth up to 2 million rubles, and now most versions of the crossover are more expensive. In addition, the state program itself can now be used only by certain categories of citizens.

Omoda C5

The Omoda brand appeared on the Russian market less than a year ago and for the first time was present only with the C5 crossover, but by August it was able to rise to fifth place in sales, overtaking even both Niva models. And this is at a relatively high price for a car, which in terms of power and dimensions in the database roughly corresponds to the more affordable Moskvich 3, for which they ask for 2.21 million rubles.

Obviously, the design and rich equipment captivates. In addition, dealers at Omoda are ready to give big discounts on every occasion, for example, for putting a car in a trade-in and for buying on credit. At some car dealerships from St. Petersburg, you can find ads for the sale of the C5 for less than 1.7 million rubles, taking into account all discounts.

Lada Niva Travel

The car that we know as Niva Travel appeared back in the late 1990s as the second generation of the Niva SUV. It was produced under the Chevrolet brand for a couple of decades, returned to AvtoVAZ in 2020, and soon underwent a facelift.

At the same time, technically, the car has changed little over the years, retaining the 1.7-liter engine and the original transfer case. Now, for both versions of Lada Niva, they promise a new, more powerful engine from the Vesta family and an enhanced transmission, but you should not expect all this until next year.

Lada Niva Legend

Everything that has been said about Niva Travel also applies to Niva Legend with the difference that it is an even more deserved model. In 2027, she will turn 50 years old, and AvtoVAZ has already confirmed that she will live to see the anniversary. Moreover, in the coming years it will also have a more powerful engine and an updated transmission.

The prices below the recommended one, which are found at some regional dealers, are explained by the remnants of cars in the Classic'22 configuration, which is no longer available and was removed from the manufacturer’s website just in August.

Note that the fields are also waiting for the return of Euro-5 engines, which has already happened in the case of Granta and led to an increase in prices for a number of complete sets. At the same time, AvtoVAZ promised to keep the base cost of its cars at the same level.

Chery Tiggo 4 Pro

This is the cheapest car in the Chery model range, which can often be found in carsharing. In 2023, the younger model left the market without the prefix Pro in the name, which was a little more affordable.

The latter, obviously, will try to replace Kaiyi X3 and X3 Pro, which began to be assembled at the Kaliningrad plant “Avtotor”. Kaiyi is a subsidiary brand of the Chery concern, which is present independently in Russia and is trying to act just in the budget segment, and the X3 model is based on the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro platform.

Geely Coolray

The fate of Coolray is not entirely clear now. On the one hand, China has already introduced a next-generation model. Like other Chinese cars, Geely Atlas Pro relies on discounts for trade-in and when buying on credit. At dealers, the amount of these discounts may even exceed the amounts indicated on the official website.
