Russian President Vladimir Putin has begun the opening ceremony of the section of the M-12 highway “East” from Moscow to Arzamas in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The length of the new road section was 308 km. Another 107 km of traffic has been going since 2022. On this segment, the highway connects four regions – Moscow, Moscow, Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod regions.

“Today we are opening a number of large road facilities. Several sections of the M-12 motorway under construction are being put into operation at once, with a total length of more than 300 km. As a result, Moscow and Arzamas will be connected by a modern high-speed highway. It will significantly halve the travel time between cities,” the head of state said at the opening ceremony.

Simultaneously with the opening of the M-12 “East”, the Southern Bypass of Arzamas (length 9.4 km) was put into operation.

It is expected that the new section of the M-12 highway “East” on the route “Russia” will reduce the travel time from Moscow to Kazan from 12 to 6.5 hours. The full construction of the M-12 on the section from Moscow to Kazan is planned to be completed in December this year.

The M-12 high-speed highway «East» is part of the international transport route Europe — Western China. The length of the route is more than 800 km. The M-12 Moscow-Kazan highway passes through the territory of the Moscow, Vladimir, Nizhny Novgorod regions, the Chuvash Republic and the Republic of Tatarstan.

The total length of the highway is 811 km, of which 47.52 km are toll sections. The permitted speed is up to 110 km/h, but, according to Deputy Prime Minister of the government Marat Khusnullin, in some sections it is possible to increase the speed to 120 140 km/h.

Thanks to this highway, the journey from Moscow to Kazan will take 6.5 hours. Previously, the travel time exceeded 12 hours due to the heavy congestion of the current federal highway M-7, as well as numerous intersections and traffic lights. It will be possible to get from Moscow to Vladimir in two hours instead of the usual four.
